Arthouse

A house designed around a private contemporary art collection — daylight tempered, walls held flat and uninterrupted.

Arthouse was designed in close collaboration with the owners and their curator; the plan is organized as a sequence of loft-like rooms, each proportioned around specific works from the collection.

Daylight is admitted through north-facing clerestories and a single carefully sized courtyard, keeping direct sun off the art while giving the rooms a consistent, even wash of light.

The architecture is deliberately quiet — flat plaster walls, wide oak floorboards, recessed baseboards — so that the collection is the first and last thing the visitor reads.
