A modest single-story house organized around an interior courtyard and a long, shaded living porch.

Abbott was conceived as an antidote to the scale of its neighbors — a low, quiet house that would give most of its site over to garden and shade.

The plan wraps a modest courtyard, with the living rooms opening onto a deep porch that faces west and holds the afternoon light off the main rooms.

Walls are troweled plaster; floors are a single continuous grey limestone; the roof is a low tray of standing-seam metal that reads almost as a shadow above the porch.
